Yahoo! Maps Global Rollout Gets a New Look – and a New Platform!
Today we’re rolling out a brand new Yahoo! Maps that has its own proprietary platform to call home. Bringing the Yahoo! Maps platform in-house gives us numerous advantages, including; global scalability, having more direct control over upgrades, easier integration of new features and user feedback, and a greater ability to improve accuracy.
The advanced functionality introduced with this new platform addresses suggestions, feature requests and bug fixes reported through the yws-maps group. Your ongoing feedback is truly appreciated, as it plays a crucial role in our development cycle.
Some of the front-end improvements you’ll immediately notice when test-driving the improved Yahoo! Maps include:
- Ability to get driving directions within 34 European countries from the U.S. Yahoo! Maps site, including
- Western Europe - Complete coverage
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, France, and Italy - Eastern Europe – Comprehensive coverage
Albania, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, The Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia/Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey
- Western Europe - Complete coverage
- A fresh new look and feel to our maps design that is distinctively Yahoo!
- Terrain overlays that provide added dimension and information at the medium and higher zoom levels.
- Neighborhood and building footprints for NYC and San Francisco show greater context at the zoom level. Additional cities are planned for rollout in 2007.
- Search for directions using only a point of interest (e.g., Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower).
- Redesigned interactive print page makes it easier to print and read driving directions.
- For users of our dial-up Maps, we have added many of the most popular features from our broadband version (new maps design, multi-point driving direction, one box address entry, integration of Yahoo! Local data), without sacrificing speed or performance.
Stay tuned for related news over the course of 2007, as we start to work with many of our European teams to introduce new in-country Maps sites in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. You can already take a look at Yahoo! Maps India, currently in beta, and up and running on our new platform too.
We hope you enjoy exploring the world on the new Yahoo! Maps, both globally and closer to home.
Jeremy Kreitler, Mike Lawless, Gus Maldonado, Mike Heideman, Rodney Fernandez, Ronny Choie, Jane Jao, and the Yahoo! Maps Team.
UPDATE:
Some people may not realize there are two versions of the site. The Broadband version is more feature rich, the Dialup version is most like our traditional website.

i’m still sulking over the change. i have always thought yahoo to do the more sensible (and spiffy) thing in terms of how they update and expand their services, but this change with yahoo maps does not make me happy. it seems to be guilty of one of the very things that yahoo doesn’t value : Following. i know, i know…technology will not stand still, and you have to stay on top of the competition. maybe it’s just my grumpiness talking.
…but could you -please- re-incorporate the feature where i could type in a US zip code with a four digit suffix and your wonderful service would not only take me to that specific address, but tell me what the number, street, and city were? i miss it a whole bunch. and none of the other map/driving direction sites do it all. i should know; i checked.
by the way, your directions are always my favorite! i’m very excited about the new coverage. keep up the good work!
May 17th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
The API is now broken.
Zip code searches now return City, State, and Zip in the tag, and is “United States”. is empty.
Example:
http://local.yahooapis.com/MapsService/V1/geocode?appid=YahooDemo&location=94102
Result:
37.779411
-122.417740
San Francisco, CA 94102
United States

I like the changes and i really like that you have imagery of not just Dublin (Ireland) but the surrounding countryside too. Unfortunately your imagery does not quite stretch to cover my house, A little more to the north west of the Dublin;) I would urge you to expand your covergae of Ireland or at least just a few more of the towns surrounding Dublin. 40% of the population of the Irish Republic lives approximately within a 40 mile radius of Dublin in towns such as Navan, Drogheda and Dundalk to the north and north west. If you covered more of this area it would be great. At the moment you are doing much better than google earth in this area so well done on that. Though I should point that the road mapping of Ireland is not quite accurate. We dont have that much dual carriageway (Green routes marked heavily), though loads is planned and under construction.
May 17th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
Maybe you could get some of the guys in your Yahoo EU HQ in over here in Dublin to get working on expanding the Irish content when you are improving the EU data. There is a huge commercial opportunity here as Google Earths coverage of Ireland is extremely limited at present (despite them also having located their EU HQ here), but where they have good coverage a lot of public and private bodies are quick to utilize it for online public and commercial services. The coastal cities and a 40 - 50 mile radius of Dublin would cover most of our population.

The one thing I wish worked is the zoom using the scrollwheel. It zooms but it does not zoom where the mouse is pointed, instead it zooms to the center point of the screen. To me, this is intuitively incorrect.
Other than that, it is a good update.
May 22nd, 2007 at 11:38 am
Would love to have to old maps back please. I used it every day in my business and it gave me the ability to choose a zip code and then search for businesses or even a partial business name in that zip code. This new oneisn’t doing it for me.
How about a link to the old version?
May 22nd, 2007 at 12:50 pm
This new version is not acceptable. I am unable to use it from MyYahoo and unable to use my saved addresses with it. Why is it every IT company wants to follow the microsoft ideaology of deliver a defective product to the Public, and fix it after everyone gets pissed off and delivers bad press about the company. What do they say? Bad press is better than no press. I sure hope to see you have fixed your screw up by putting the old version back in place, While you’re at it, fire the programer that delivered the shitty map program. Your maps used to be the best. I’m looking for another map app now.
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Does anyone know if Yahoo is using geocoding software or data supplied either by Group 1 Software or the more recent ParcelPoint product from First American? I noticed that the geocoding in this release appears more accurate than in the past (e.g. address locations or more accurate in terms of position).
Curious about the data, I tracked a series of Starbucks locations and some were spot on, while others were offset by varying amounts from their true locations. Also. I was surprised to find that geocoding in some rural areas was very accurate, but there were displacement errors in addresses in some urban areas.
Thanks

Cha, I wonder if there is some available functions in API for getting this service into our mash-up yahoo maps? where? please, some hint!
June 4th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Yahoo used to be the best web map but is now difficult and lame. Apparently trying to copy the competition for some unknown reason, yahoo has now joined google and mapquest in boring and difficult map searches.
June 4th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
I like the simplicity of the old yahoo directions! They used to be so great. There should be an option to use that style or the new style.
June 4th, 2007 at 11:16 pm
I don’t like the new maps. I like the ones you have before you changed to these. These don’t print very well and they are harder to follow. Could you please go back to the others as these have been hard to follow. Please please change back.
June 5th, 2007 at 12:04 am
Hate the new maps. They’re slow to load. It used to give you the 4 digit zip extension for any address that you put in. That was a great feature and it is now gone. There is a link to old dial up maps that used to work and NOW its gone. (There is a link once you load a slow map but the link doesn’t work any more.) I will admit this latest version is faster than the last version but it is still slower that the original. PLEASE put ZIP codes back in. (that is the main reason I use maps.)
Please make the old version work again.
June 5th, 2007 at 6:16 am
I don’t like the new maps.
The link from my Yahoo home page does not carry the address to the new map page.
I don’t always get the total trip time and total miles.
Sometime when I zoom in I wind up in the ocean.
June 5th, 2007 at 7:33 am
I type in an address in Michingan the address is 25922 Princeton Inkster Mi and the map that comes is not even in michigan. The map that comes up is Spanishburg, WV 25922, United States. I think these new maps are horrible.
June 5th, 2007 at 10:21 am
I hate the change! I was used to inserting an address zooming in on a location , clicking on a printable version so I could copy it so it could be pasted on an email. I have been trying to do this with the “new and confusing” improvement for over 30 minutes now, AND I’M PISSED! I’m looking for another method right now!
June 5th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
new maps suck. old ones were so user friendly. now i type in address and does nothing. good-bye Yahoo!
June 5th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
If it’s not broken, why fix it? The old version was so much more useful and user friendly. I cannot stand this new version and refuse to use it.
Before, I would type an address and get my location. Now, I type my address, I then go to a different screen with various choices, then I have to click on one, HOPING, it’s the right link.
Forget it. I’m out of here.
June 5th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
After 3 attempts at trying to add a saved entry as my start location, I had to go into EDIT and then back out before it recognized “HOME” as my address. It wanted to take me to Kansas instead. Trying to navigate, I too ended up in the ocean… and when I went back both the addresses were gone. And what is with all the moving stuff. I struggle enough w/ seeing what I’m doing… but now two boxes of moving advertisement and a smaller map. Thank goodness I’m not trying to do this with VISTA… I’d been completely frustrated.
google maps, here I come.
June 5th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Your new site SUCKS!!!!!! not only did you remove the the feature where i could type in a US zip code with a four digit suffix and your wonderful service would not only take me to that specific address, but tell me what the number, street, and city were? You have also removed the ability to keep unlimited addresses in my address book.
I own a small business and use both these features for driving instructions and IRS purposes.
Thank you for messing us a terrific service.
All the best to AT&T/Yahoo
June 5th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
Under your “Better” AT&T Yahoo Maps I can not longer copy a map into my documents or email. The new version is of no use to me. Thanks for nothing.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:23 am
How about being able to see AVERAGE traffic information for a certain time- like what a certain road looks like at 4pm on a thursday…?
June 6th, 2007 at 3:14 am
Ditto on many of the negative comments to date, particularly the loss of the feature where I had unlimited addresses that could be recalled by beginning to type the name. I like the capability of clearing the ’slate’ that is now available, but being limited to TEN saved addresses is inadequate. I assume that user comments will be reviewed and enhancements will follow to bring the new system up to par.
I’ll check on Yahoo maps from time to time, but will be using another program until necessary system improvements are in place.
June 6th, 2007 at 6:01 am
Your old Maps program was just fine, I don’t understand why Yahoo felt compelled to “Fix” it. I do not like your new version. It’s harder to locate addresses and your pull down menus ae subordinate to the advertizing so that you can not read them let alone use them. Do your management folks actually use your products on your public production server durring and after you release it to the epublic? I don’t think so . . .
June 6th, 2007 at 6:16 am
you have me on your map at the wrong location. how do you correct it. people utilize your map and they call me in frustration as they cannot find me. my address is 4900 blackstone ave, bx, ny 10471 you direct them to west 252 street. the “49″ of 4900 blackstone ave means that the house is located on west 249 street. my home is located on w249 between arongton ave and independence ave and you send everyone to an unknow address. your gps is wrong and i do not know how to correct this. since the proliferation of internet maps ;and gps systems, i have experienced a huge increase in missed appointments , missed deliveries, groceries sent to other people, and all kinds of frustrations. do you have a way of resolving this???
June 6th, 2007 at 6:26 am
Horrid! Go back to the original version. this really sucks!
June 6th, 2007 at 7:25 am
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!! SEE BELOW! If they DON’T give us the option to use the old version, I will need to find another map - in which case, why not switch over completely? No reason to usee MyYahoo! when it doesn’t get me to where I want… Does Google offer free e-mail, and a “My Google” page?? Time to switch!!

The new version of your map program has our town in the wrong spot; reference Sherburn, Minnesota 56171. you have the start point for this town in the west-bound lane of I-90, so you cant go anywhere east without first going west to the first exit. I had contacted you earlier and this got fixed on the old version, then got screwed up (along with everythign else that I can tell) with the new version. Please fix this town location, thanks!

Now I understand the problem…..AT&T…..I dropped Cingular when they married AT&T….Now they have destroyed another useful product
June 6th, 2007 at 8:21 am
The new map of the dial-up version is terrible for dial-up. And it sucks at work where I have broadband too. I have not used yahoo.com for searches in a long time since they took away the simplicity, opting instead for google. But I have always loved and spoke highly of yahoo maps. It was always very clear, simple, and efficient. There was no reason for you to redesign this. Please change it back. You can’t compete by doing the same thing as your competitors. The old format was excellent you should have kept that and just added new features.
June 6th, 2007 at 8:41 am
i hate it also go back to the old map much easier
June 6th, 2007 at 9:05 am
I don’t like your new system. Go back to the original.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:07 am
These new maps are much less useful. Can’t find anything anymore, harder to print, harder to find nearby businesses. Who needs this? Within Chicago, it no longer shows CTA “L” stations, so now I can’t figure out how to get to a place via public transit. What a useless change! Bring back the old - which were much better. Now I am forced to use another map service, but before Yahoo was about the best. (I understand you’re screwing up the useful and successful Yahoo Photos too - what’s going on here?)
June 6th, 2007 at 10:26 am
Since you have the new “System” I changed to Map Quest! You did a bad job!
June 6th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Reading the Blog… noticed this request! Count me in also - to [re-incorporate the feature where i could type in a US zip code with a four digit suffix and your wonderful service would not only take me to that specific address, but tell me what the number, street, and city were? i miss it a whole bunch. and none of the other map/driving direction sites do it all. i should know; i checked.]
June 6th, 2007 at 11:27 am
I could go on & on about the changes that aren’t good. Just look at the comments from others - I could copy and paste all that I agree with - that the changes have downgraded the “good” Yahoo Maps that I have used without fail and prefered to all others all these years!
June 6th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
Would be nice if Yahoo Maps allows more than 10 saved locations. And Google Maps has a feature that I think Yahoo should have: the ability to pan and move the map in the print image, prior to printing. Also, is it really that hard to have a save button next to the address tab?
June 6th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I agree: give us the old Yahoo Maps back! I work in the real estate industry and use maps all the time to locate cities and addresses all over the U.S. I need a mapping program that’s quick, easy to use, and, most of all, ACCURATE; Yahoo Maps is no longer any of these. I tried to look up South Lake Tahoe, CA in Yahoo and it gave me a location on Lake Ave, in Tahoe City, CA. I just can’t rely on Yahoo Maps any more, for anything, and have decided to switch to Google, just so I can find what I need. GEEZ, Yahoo — get it right!!!
June 6th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
I agree with the other folks here - the new maps application is not an improvement for me. I prefer the old version.
AdBlock Plus will improve your experience but - what happened to all my recent history? *sigh*
June 6th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
The new Yahoo maps is difficult and confusing. I used to use Yahoo maps all the time. Now when I try to use the new Yahoo maps to look for directions, I get frustrated and usually end up at MapQuest. Please bring back the old Yahoo maps version. Thank you.
June 6th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
I’ll join in the growing chorus of those who don’t like the new maps. Bring back the classic Yahoo Maps, please.
June 6th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
New version SUCKS!! Harder to use, less personalized (Where’s my home and office locations?) Font size more difficult to read, especially when trying to take a quick glance while driving!! Back to MapQuest and reading about it’s advertisers
June 6th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
i dont know what these people are wining about, i think its awesome!im never going to use google ever again! cuz its the gayest thing ever its a lot harder to do anything on google earth because you have to buy it first! who wants to do that huh?yahoo is fast, free, and reliable!
June 6th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Please bring back the classic yahoo maps site. It was simple, efficient, and FAST. These new bells and whistles are irritating because they waste time. If we want something more, we’ll use the new broadband one. Thanks!
June 6th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
I agree with the others, who prefers the old version of Yahoo maps. The new one is more difficult to read and complicated to use.I don’t have the steady nerves to use it.
Please,give the old version back!!!
June 6th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Sorry - the new Maps site is a complete disaster. Please give us the option of using the old format. I am going to have to abandon Yahoo Maps and possibly Yahoo altogether (e-mail account 8+ years) unless you do something.

Please give us the old version back. Keep your new one if you want as I am sure YOU probably love it. All the complaints I have read are all true. I will have to seek out another website to maps since this one is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad.
June 7th, 2007 at 7:38 am
Please give us back the old websitej. The new one needs to be tweaked more. I run a business that uses yahoo maps and if the new one doesn’t get better I’m going to have to go elsewhere.

The new improved Yahoo map is so bad that I have removed it from my faves. Bye-bye.
June 7th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
I prefer the old version of yahoo maps, found it much more user friendly…find it very annoying that I can’t just type in the address and zipcode to get a city…please return the option of using the old map version
June 7th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
I put in 13992 Manchester Road, St. Louis, MO, and it pulled up a map to Tatvan, Turkey. I tried it a few different times, and it was never right.
June 7th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
My saved location of my workplace (that I’ve had for years) is not registering right with this new version of Yahoo maps and ends up giving me directions from the town center. Not very helpful. And trying to find my saved locations to edit them is frustrating the hell out of me. It used be very accessible. The new updated Yahoo maps is nowhere near as quick of process as the old one.
June 7th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
where are the directions?????
June 7th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
do not like the new maps. can’t get to where you are going with the non directions that we get. BRING THE OLD WEB SITE FOR MAPS BACK……..
June 7th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
the old map was better
June 7th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
about 6 yrs ago you had my home located about 6 blocks from where it should have benn. Then you got it right for a few years!!! Know it doesn’t want to recognize my home address at all..
Nice going!!!
June 7th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
I’d like to add my voice to those calling for access to the older version. I used the old version many times daily for several years now to find directions for work. Its simplicity and clean design were its hallmarks. Now, they have replaced it with an inferior Google Maps clone. They moved the distance for each maneuver over so it’s harder to match it with the particular turn, there are no borders around them, either. I also really liked the ability to start a new map entirely from the last end point. That way I could print directions from a given location to the next separately on the back of each work ticket. What I see here is an attempt to grab a bit of the Google glamor and ending up simply alienating those who found their way here looking to get away from it. There are some good points, but overall: thumbs down.
June 7th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Absolutely horrible!!! What did you inhale? Not a single improvement!!!.
Extremely inconvenient compared to the old site where you could input only ZIP code, not coonting others. The directions were totally wrong, like exiting freeway 8(!) exits pass the correct one.
BRING BACK THE OLD SITE!!!!!!!
June 7th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Someone needs to build in functionality to display directions for commercial vehicles or trucks that may not be allowed on all roads. You should be able to check off a box saying, “Truck Routes Only” and not have to worry about getting around the Parkways or tunnels that don’t allow trucks.
HUGE HELP! Would PAY for that!

IMPROVEMENT IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING THANKS
June 8th, 2007 at 6:35 am
I agree with most other posts here- the new maps is lousy. Much harder to use than older version. New but not improved. I will have to find alternative to Yahoo.
June 8th, 2007 at 6:37 am
This “improvement” is obviously the work of someone who does not have enough to do. You took something that was easy and straightforward to use and made it impossible. I agree totally with the people who complain about not being able to use zip codes as a lookup.
June 8th, 2007 at 6:39 am
…oh yeah, I wonder if the geeks at Yahoo actually read these and/or care about these overwhelmingly negative responses to the “exciting, new and crappier!” maps?
June 8th, 2007 at 6:48 am
Please bring back the old dial up maps, the new system is not working properly and I really used that system, PLEASE!!!!
June 8th, 2007 at 6:53 am
WHY CHANGE SOMETHING THATS NOT BROKE GEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 8th, 2007 at 7:19 am
Oh yeah, this is much better. Now you can’t get driving directions at all. Much better system!!! I guess it’s back to Mapblast.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:30 am
I don’t like it! The original Yahoo Maps was far more user friendly. Don’t get me started on the broadband version…I hate it. I always click on “original version” and now that sucks, too! Ugh.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:32 am
Please bring back the original. I will no longer use your map.
This is just no good to me.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:48 am
The only thing I don’t like is that you can’t use a zip code as a starting point. Kind of silly. I guess if I need that functionality I’ll pop over to Google.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:07 am
not user friendly. i want driving directions. i want to get them with ease. i don’t want to have to keep clicking on things to get the turn by turn as it used to be. bring back the old one!!!!!
June 8th, 2007 at 9:14 am
I’ve noticed that I can no longer drag my arrow through the maps,as if I were walking. I liked your map to where after I went bike riding or walking I couold re-trace my stepa and find out the distance of my travel. Is there any way you could help me incorporate that?
THank you, colleen

things when things are fine-progress my foot
June 8th, 2007 at 10:55 am
PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD MAP STYLE, THIS NEW STYLE IS HORRIBLE AND DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW!
June 8th, 2007 at 11:07 am
I can’t get anything….keeps saying that the server is too busy. Well, I’m too busy to deal with this foolishness. I’m NOT your beta tester.
June 8th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Actually the current Dial-up Map (origional) should be kept there parallel to the updated new one. The dial-up (origional) could provide very detailed text driving information. We wish yahoo could accept this suggestion.

June 8th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
When displaying driving direction in Europe the distance should be shown in kilometers/meters (in SI unit) rather than miles. Only US and UK use mileage system. Users in Europe will be confused by distance shown in mile.
June 8th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Your new map site totally sucks - I wanted direction from my home, in San Diego, to San Diego Iternational Airport and ended up in the midwest someplace. It’s a disaster - bring back the original, at least we stayed local
June 8th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
The original or classic version is all I need. Why has the access to it been erased?
June 8th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
Why has the access to the original [or classic] version been erased?
June 8th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
I think that this used to be much better. You call this improved???
Nope, just like the new Yahoo was supposed to turn me on. I went back to the old version as being better.
The new Yahoo Maps SUCK. I am going to go get my map at mapquest.com or somewhere else.
June 8th, 2007 at 6:24 pm
I think that it is a very good map it is very usfull and very well managged.
June 8th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
huh.. I drive to travel to down DEL RIO across to Acuna Mexico and my family from house and with visit to then i am back to goings across Del Rio we to home Stonewall TX allow
June 8th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
This is great! Its like i am inside a space shuttle and being blessed to view God’s awesome creations on Earth!
June 8th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Where are the turn by turn direction maps? They wont appear in my browser. Was simple and straight forward before. Now it is broken. When I enter a location in low bandwidth version it gives me a blank map with just the navigation tabs on the edges. I have to re-size the map for the location to suddenly appear. I am using IE 6-0. Is yahoo now not compatible? (my OS won’t update to 7) After leaving Map quest behind four years ago looks like i will be trying it again.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
looks like its almost Unanimous. Forgot to say something in my previous post
“BYE!”

WHERE ARE ALL THE 3D MAPS OF THE TOWNS AND CITY
June 9th, 2007 at 4:37 am
It’s been an amazing experience to see the world and the city, office i work. Thanks a ton for having given an oppurtunity for a person like me who cannot aford to travel around the world. I was wondering whether it is possible to zoom-in more.lET ME KNOW.
June 9th, 2007 at 4:47 am
I must have over 50 saved places, and now you are restricting it to only 10. Why? I can’t believe that is taking up so many resources that you now have to limit it. Senseless. You are driving me into the arms of Google.
June 9th, 2007 at 9:07 am
I don’t like this new technology at all. Yahoo is taking a step backwards. Why is it when I type in a Tinley Park, IL address I am getting the starting point of Olyphant, PA. Also, where can I keep my favorite saved places. When I go to the link to add a favorite address it doesn’t work for me. Yahoo’s directions were the best. Simple. Now I need to go to another provider. I read the blogs and it appears to be unanimous, we want the old version!!!!!!
June 9th, 2007 at 9:09 am
the old map, has been more better…
June 9th, 2007 at 9:15 am
I wan’t a link to the old maps. This one sucks! How about this for an idea: Quit jacking with stuff!
June 9th, 2007 at 9:20 am
Stupid freaking maps won’t even show up. Error on Page! What the heck! Either fix the crap or allow us access to the old ones. Guess I’ll have to go to mapquest from now on.
June 9th, 2007 at 9:40 am
Yahoo.Maps feature REQUEST. Cannot find anywhere else to ask. A feature to keep a destination centered while zooming in or out would be extremely helpful for me while using the service on the road.
June 9th, 2007 at 10:37 am
I just got the most ridiculous directions between two points in Los Angeles I have ever seen. There should be a choice to use highways or take surface streets. I honestly don’t know how the routing works but it’s terrible.
June 9th, 2007 at 11:07 am
I THINK THIS WOULD BE A GREAT TOOL IF IT DID WHAT I WANTED IT TO DO! I AM GOING OUT OF TOWN ON BUSINESS AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE. I HAVE CERTAIN STOPS ON A ROUTE THAT I NEED TO COVER AND IT DOESNT MATTER IN WHICH ORDER I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO GO FULL CIRCLE FROM MY HOTEL TO DRIVE AROUND THE CITY AND GET BACK TO MY HOTEL. NOT KNOWING THE AREA I WOULD LIKE THIS TO HAVE THE OPTION ON HITTING ALL THE STOPS ON THE ROUTE IN A TIMELY FASHION BUT THIS HAS ME DRIVING BACK AND FORTH IN CIRCLES. THIS WAS NO HELP AT ALL!
June 9th, 2007 at 11:08 am
If you are going to change something that works really well, to something that doesn’t work so well…give people access to the old one that DOES work! I have used Yahoo! Maps for years, now I have to go learn Google or MapQuest or something else. I DON’T like the new Yahoo mapping system…it really sucks.
June 9th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
new yahoo maps suck…cannot find address
June 9th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
It might be a cool international “thing” but it looks to have broke the US maps all the heck. I just tried to go to this new map feature from a few other applications on the web, and they all broke… showed multiple locations, but none of them where the item “WAS”, even when passing in the country, state and zip…
You need to fix that ASAP…. makes it useless for what I wanted it for…finding a local place…
I was on the haircuttry page.
June 9th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
I hate hate hate hate hate this new interface. It is 10x more complicated than before. Hello Mapquest.
June 9th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
pPlease don’t force me to use Yahoo Maps. Google or Map Quest are much more user friendly. REALLY
June 9th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Hello there!
I am a map freak! I just Love Maps! I could look at them for hours and sometimes I do. I check out several online mapsites regularly. I haven’t looked at this one lately, but when I saw the word “updated”, the first thought that came to my mind was how current the roads were or other developments like buildings and housing areas. After looking at the progress of the Benicia Bridge, I see that the new Northbound span only has it’s peers in the water, when in reality, the bridge is almost finished. This seems to be a common issue with all the mapsites; some are more current than others in satellite imagery; they all seem to be about a year or more out of date. Is there a reason for this?
Some of the things I would like to see on all of the sites (and I will let them know) is: (1) Incorporated cities need to show their boundries by coloring them in to remove the guesswork of street addresses that are on the edge of town or in another city. (2) Show the mountains and their elevations, just like on paper maps! (3) Show the ski areas and resorts, just like on paper maps! (4) Stop the curser from holding on to the map after dragging it! The delay is only a second or two, but it is annoying and puts the location back to where it started, unfortunately. (5) This next request may be tough. Show the average daily traffic volumes of the streets by color codiing the roads and possibly showing corresponding numbers to match different places on the roads. (6) It would be nice to show the street address numbers, where they start on a street, just like on paper maps. Parks, Colleges and transportation links like train stations and airports and bus terminals should be on a map if not already.
Thanks for reading this!
June 9th, 2007 at 9:16 pm
It’s worst than before!
June 9th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Sadly, the mistakes noted here are the result of Yahoo! using a half-baked, mismanaged, and poorly-engineered technology called Universal Location Manager (ULM), rather than any incompetence within the Maps team itself. (ULM stores locations, connects each customer’s query to a location, that sort of thing. It’s the reason that when you type “Harvard, MA” into the Maps field, you instead get Allston, MA: a years-old error in the ULM POI database lists Harvard University above the actual town of Harvard, MA in relevance. D’oh. There goes a town of potential Yahoo! users….)
Yahoo! requires its internal teams, such as Maps, to use ULM even when they can plainly see that it’s bug-ridden. It’s frustrating. Friends of mine at Yahoo! have documented dozens of major ULM issues, the kind of things that would be considered show-stoppers at most companies. But the ULM management always prefers to add “features” — even those of questionable utility — rather than fix bugs. Yahoo! as a whole has no commitment to product quality, and no credible way for exceptional teams, like the Maps team, to bypass poor products such as ULM in favor of more robust offerings. Their hands are tied. It’s sad.
June 9th, 2007 at 10:44 pm
FYI. Your maps are not functioning right. Click on zoom opition and you don’t get zoom but instead you are back to the beginning where you put in directions information. NOT WORKING GUYS!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I AM BACK TO USING MAPQUEST.
GOOD BYE GUYS AND SO SHOULD EVERYONE ELSE. Once Yahoo sees the their bandwathc is low they will go back to the old maps.
“TTFE”
TA TA FOREVER!
June 10th, 2007 at 6:43 am
Well thanks guys I drove around for an hour looking for a “specific” local pet store & your sucky map plopped me in front of another crappy PetsMart! You owe me a 1/4 of a tank of gas!
To Rebeca who said “IF IT DID WHAT I WANTED IT TO DO!”
If it did what you wanted it to do then you would be on another mapping site & not “Ya-screwed”!
June 10th, 2007 at 6:45 am
Your maps suck!!! You should invest in making something that’s supposed to suck…Like Vacuums!
June 10th, 2007 at 7:00 am
Why did you, or what possesed you to mess with yahoo maps! good God, cant you folks leave anything alone! Having a hell of a time even trying to access my mail because you keep screwing things up. Ancient Chinese proverb, if it taint broke leave it alone!!!
June 10th, 2007 at 10:46 am
what in the world did you do? the maps suck! they were so much better before! jesus.
June 10th, 2007 at 11:42 am
use the best for the rest..
June 10th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
I am distraught! Where’s the capability of saving more than 10 addresses? This is my sole reason for using Yahoo maps rather than mapquest or any other mapping online. With that feature gone, I will probably switch over to something else. This is a nightmare for me!!!!
June 10th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
Also, why is saving a location not intuitive? Eventually, one finds it, but what’s up with that? Not that I can’ appreciate new things, but if you have to remove excellent functionality and “dummy friendly” features, what’s the point of new & improved? It leads to move on to other more friendly mapping websites. Oh brother!
June 10th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
BRING BACK YAHOO CHAT!
June 10th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
You folks get ANYTHING at all out of this new Broadband maps??? I can type into the “GET MAP” fields whatever address, it always returns “Your search produced no matches”, even with “Chicago, IL” - what’s wrong? IE 6.0? I tried with Firefox 1.5 and won’t even get that far: only the broken QuickTime icon.
At least the dial-up map still finds everything, though I agree: its “up-date” is quite some “down-date”!
Oh well, I’ll google, just hoping that they have fixed their map mistakes…
June 11th, 2007 at 6:42 am
Will not use yahoo maps ever again. You guys suck. I entered the exact name of the place I want and you pull up a map and 5 locations on it. I uncheck the four I don’t want leaving just the one, and every time I click on the plus symbol to enlarge it brings back the unwanted crap. Then when I get close to what I wanted to see it jumped to one of the unwanted ones and not the one I chose. I can not go to street level because your jackass map moves to the numeber 2 location 3 blocks away everytime. I tried your map several times and do not want to use something where I have to turn everything off to use it and it keeps turning it back on. How annoying. Features should be there if you want to add them, not that you have to turn off over and over. Try assumiong this: We are not all dumbasses and some of us actually know what we are looking for. Who are you Microsft? Trying to make your map intuitive? That means we have to fight for what we want to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 11th, 2007 at 8:47 am
Why is it that the map, when accessed through Yellow Pages, will not return to the Yello Page list when I click the back arrow? Instead, it refreshes the map and I have to go back to Yahoo home and initiate a new Yello Pages search. That’s frustrating.
June 11th, 2007 at 9:06 am
FTW??? The Dial-Up Maps don’t even work! Welcome to ScrewHoo! This is about as uesful as Windos PISSTA.
June 11th, 2007 at 10:10 am
It doesn’t show the zip code anymore. In the old map, when I entered an address with just the street address, city and state, the map would redisplay the full address with the zip code. Wish you could add that feature back to the new map.
June 11th, 2007 at 10:34 am
hi i m faisal
June 11th, 2007 at 11:06 am
Does Yahoo even read this blog? Obviously you have fixed something that was not broke. Millions of folks went to the old Yahoo Maps because of the features it had. The 4 digit zip, unlimited “my saved locations”, easier to read and print directions, faster download on dialup. Please listen to the public and go back or at least give us the option to use the Classic Yahoo Maps instead, with all it’s features. Otherwise, you will have a drove of folks switching to Google Maps, and reading Their advertising instead of yours.
June 11th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Where is the old Classic Yahoo Maps?
I need the old format with the “To” “From” on top, not a page or two later.
I also need an overall map AND a small map showing an enlarge of the streets around the destination.
What I really want is the “Classic” Yahoo map.
June 11th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Why does this thing throw me into the Atlantic Ocean (not literally)? I input an adress and if I zoom in, it brings up a blue map named North Atlantic Ocean. I’ve ended up going to either MapQuest or Google Maps to get a map that actually works -there’s a novel idea! What I really hate is that I had this on my Yahoo home page and could enter an address and click “get maps” but now it just takes me to the new screen and I have to re-enter the address.
June 11th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
the new yahoo maps are terrible.
Ive lived here 40 years and it cant find my house, Ill be using mapQuest from now on.
June 11th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
This is WONDERFUL !!!! :))
I thank each one of you for your great work !!!
Jay
June 11th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
how do i get to the origional/old style…. i am not comfortable with your new flashdance cutie site.
June 11th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
There is a REAL problem with the “printable version” of the map I see on the screen: it cuts out a good 50% of the border areas, which is very important to be able to see from where one is coming in order to travel to the specific, mapped center site. Driving directions are useful, but nothing beats looking at a map itself for planning the best route, especially in local areas one knows. Otherwise, now that I have learned the newer methodology, the changes are quite excellent.
June 11th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
I came to this blog thinking I would find where they hid the “save address” function only to read that I can only save 10 addresses; I have 210 all ready saved. I thought that “if I only could find that, I could live with all the other announces” (zip popping, auto type/search, etc…). It’s not coming back, only getting worse.
Where can I go that will save my addresses? Are there any outlook add-ins that type back to a mapping service?
Please advise, Paul.Alberty@sbcglobal.net.
June 11th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
The changes are terrible. Your site is useless now. Thanks alot!
June 11th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Sad - really disappointed. The Print function in the dial-up version has gotten worse - much less functional. Used to be one could display just particular turns in a sequence. That function is lost. Why is the title of my directions now “Los Angeles Ca 90017, United States” rather than the address I’m going to? If you’re going to change Yahoo Maps, please leave the old version accessible - it was working great - and it was FAST! and EASY.
I have been a faithful (AND PAYING) user of SBC Yahoo for over 5 years. Now that they’ve added display ads to web mail, and decreased performance, and I have to learn a new user interface ANYWAY, I might as well search for a better alternative. Too bad.
June 11th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
I DO NOT LIKE THE “NEW” YAHOO! MAPS I cannot find a way to save or edit previous saved entries…I can’t even find them anymore. I keep being sent to states other than the one typed in a couple of times I found myself in some body of water. Until some of the features that I used before are returned I will just have to use Google or Mapquest. This “New” Yahoo! maps helps me not at all.
June 11th, 2007 at 6:39 pm
i need to find out where this place is 32 clark smith dr louisa and 1207court house rd louisa
June 12th, 2007 at 2:15 am
you do not have my home address properly located. 4900 blackstone ave , bx, ny 10471 is on west 249 street between arlington and and independence aves. your map is directing everyone to west 252 street. once people are directed there , they cannot find me becausse all the streets in that area are dead ends. how can this be corrected?
June 12th, 2007 at 6:15 am
good work
June 12th, 2007 at 7:13 am
It works for me! I have a friend that lives in the country…I can see his house…Google shows me just trees from outer space. Ten years ago we all might be thumbing through a five year old road atlas to find some address. I think both services are working hard to make the best product they can. How about just a suggestion box with out the snarky comments and threats? Be part of the solution!
June 12th, 2007 at 7:54 am
I agree with everyone above who do NOT like the new mapsite. Now I have to type the complete address including city and state, whereas before I could use recall because city/state was a separate entry. Much longer to load even on DSL. More complex is NOT better. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. Put the old one back or give me a link to it.
June 12th, 2007 at 8:41 am
The new maps are not that good you can’t zoom in on it to get the streets.
also if the map doesn’t know your rewuest it will give it to you in another state. go back to the old version
June 12th, 2007 at 9:13 am
I will be leaving Ovid, NY and going to Darien Lake in Darien Center, NY 14040. Could you give me the best directions possible. Thank you very much.
June 12th, 2007 at 11:52 am
HATE IT…HATE IT! Our company used Yahoo everyday, now I’m using Google Maps. The responces on here show I’m not alone.
If it’s not broke don’t fix it! Please bring back our classic maps
June 12th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
I hate the new system! It takes me forever to find my old stuff, because it always says “multiple addresses” and then half the time the mileage is VASTLY different from the same two addresses before! I’ve always used Yahoo Maps for my mileage reports, but I may have to switch to something more useable. Is there any way to get back to the old program?
June 12th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
The new maps are worse than ever. Go back to classic. They are nice and easy. This complicated, no location finding junk needs to be tossed!!! Easy is better!!!
June 12th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
It’s about someone does something to the map on yahoo. No offense. No matter where my husband and I would go and need directions, the compass would be turned around then in real life! For example I live mid US and my parents live in FL. We would look at the street level in our state and instead of going South like we’re suppose to, the map showed North. We didn’t get lost on the road but we had to use our own judgement!!!!!
June 12th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
You have ruined your maps feature. It used to work perfectly. Now it is terrible and I have to use something else. Why did you mess up a good thing?
June 12th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Hello Maps users.
We both understand, and want to understand more, your frustrations. There are a couple of things I think are important to realize.
First, we have the new Broadband maps. This is a slightly different work-flow than many people are used to. I think you’ll like that it can be a more efficient way to get maps, driving directions, see imagery, and search for businesses. Some people like them, some people don’t (and people who like things typically don’t leave feedback, so it’s not as bad as it may seem on this list). We are really trying to offer a choice here.
Second, I >think< many of these complaints are about people being pushed in to the new maps, who preferred the old site, and may not realize that the Dialup version is just a new rev of the old site with only a couple of changes. You can switch between versions using the link at the top of the page.
Here are some things were working on to address your issues:
1) Yes, the limit of 10 addresses is frustrating. We have switched interfaces for a variety of reasons. For those with many saved addresses, your addresses are safe, and will be made available again when we can de-bug and release the new unlimited saved address feature.
2) Zip+4. There is a small but vocal community who really likes to see the results in Zip+4. This will come back.
3) People are reporting some defects in printing that were not caught in QA. We’re reviewing these and will fix them.
4) There are a few other specific examples, and we’re creating lists of these issues to work through.
We are trying to service the needs of a vast community of users. One persons ’simple’ is another persons ‘underpowered’, (likewise ‘feature-rich’ and ‘over-complicated’). We’re trying to build a system that intelligently does both.
If you would like to report a specific reason why you’re not happy, please let me know how we can improve it. We’re not going to (and really can’t) bring back the old site, but I do want to make the new maps the best possible experience for all of you, both the leaner and richer formats. If you give me a suggestion for enhancement that is actionable, or can articulate the nature of what you’re not happy with that is new, we are listening.
Mike

Having trouble with new format. I registered and still can’t get in with my sign-in ID and password. Liked it better the old way.
June 12th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
I HATE the new maps. Everyone I know used to use maps other than yahoo and I always swore by yahoo maps. They were the quickest and easiest to navigate. Now I have to find a new place to use maps. These are SO BAD.
June 12th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
your new site sucks hairy choed. im using google or mapquest cause yours just sucks.
June 12th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
ADMINISTRATOR-thanks for at least looking at the responses. I have posted before, echoing the chorus of thosewho don’t like the changes. Here is a SPECIFIC suggestion for you. At least change the font back to a LARGER BOLD type that can be more easily seen when you are driving and have to glance over at it in the passenger seat (let’s face it, that’s how it is used most of the time). By the way, although it is true that people who are pleased don;t always write in to say it, people who are displeased don’t always either, the just leave. And I have never seen quite as large an outpouring of disapproval.

Maps/directions….does not work. I keep trying to enter an address and it keeps repeating itself and giving me a location in Seattle and I am looking for Oklahoma City. So I am off to Mapquest to get directions….this site is the pits.
June 12th, 2007 at 8:09 pm
This website do not giving me nothing, before was the direction with the map, now just direction and I couldn’s see the map nowhere, I think the way it was before is better.

Your new Yahoo maps and driving directions don’t work like before. This is the second time I look for an address and the directions are wrong!
If the new format and database is an improvement, please let me have the old system.
Try getting the driving directions to this address: 999 West Cutting Blvd. Point Richmond California departing from Berkeley. It will direct you to Barrett Avenue and Central Richmond. What a mess!
I had to look it up in Mapquest. I liked Yahoo before. Now I will use Mapquest first.

Joe -
If you’re talking about a larger font in the textual driving directions, it’s already available. See the three letter A’s, of varying size? Click on the largest one. It’ll make the font larger. Perhaps the bigger font should be the default …

Really pleased maps are now spot on for the UK - love it! Google Maps is no more (or at least, not in my bookmarks).

You had the best mapping on the web. Now you have a confusing and hard to use mess. Please go back to being the best.

Yo Mike,
Ask Yahoo where 1776 Broadway is.

I hate the new format - not very user friendly - after 4 years of yahoo maps I am switching back to Mapquest.
June 13th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Hard to read! Red highway hide exit numbers unless zoomed in on. Put a city in Michigan with zip and got a location in Germany!!!! What gives?
June 13th, 2007 at 10:48 am
I think it is rather a significant improvement. Of course, change brings growing pains. But the growing cannot stop. One always prefers to be in his/her comfort zone. This isn’t anything new, and everyone will eventually find the new maps just about as comfy as the old one, while Yahoo makes sure all little bugs and inconveniences are ironed out. I like this new one much better than the old one.
June 13th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
I really LOVE the new Yahoo Maps. It’s a much a much cleaner interface and, frankly, I am having none of the problems expressed above. I agree that unlimited saved locations would be useful and, thus, it’s nice to see Yahoo working on that. Yet, overall, I find the new Yahoo Maps much more user-friendly.
While it’s not perfect, let’s at least try to recognize that some of the vitriole here is from people that just don’t like change, especially if it affects a daily routine. Sometimes, you just have to make adjustments (even compromises) in some areas in order to achieve gains in others.

June 13th, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I like the old version better but have goten used to the dial up verion. I would like 2 changes 1 the ability to take restricted roads OFF the search! I do quite a bit of drivng through metro NYC, I tow a camper but can’t go on many roads YAHOO maps does not understand that, yet the other guys do. 2 add the “quickest way or more seinic” I like to take the back roads sometimes but also like highways others give me the chocie. 3 yeah i lied sue me tolls i’m cheep towing a camper more then doubles most tolls! Give me the ability to co with tolls or none!

What -No Israel? Can you search Israel - Going there in 2 months and I need Map Quest there
June 13th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
I’m having serious problems with the new yahoo maps.
Most important - you now limit saved locations to 10.
I have over 25 - at least they still show up.
but I can’t add any new locations, which is a major issue.
The new address format is not as easy to use - at least for me.
I prefer separate fields for address, city, etc.
Also, the ormat of the instructions and maps is also not as good as before.
I’ve tried both dial-up and broadband. Neither one addresses these concerns. And the labels are not good. I don’t need to be on dial-up to prefer that format.
Not much positive feedback posted on this site.
Any recommendations for a good mapping site?
Or you could revert back to the “classic” yahoo maps
June 14th, 2007 at 8:06 am
I like the old one much better. I’d like to see the ability to choose between the two so everyone is happy.

what happened to the feature of being able to avoid tolls or highways in general? I haven’t used yahoo maps in quite some time since i absolutely love google’s hybrid feature - friend told me yahoo now had hybrid & i was thrilled at the appearance, until i realized i can’t map a “no tolls” route - essential! let me know when that’s available & i’ll be back

your new maps website sucks……..go back to basics…….it worked fine before.
June 14th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
google maps found 3401 Centrelake Dr, Ontario, CA 91761…….
you say it doesnt exist……….so that means my building with approximately 500 professionals in it is just a figment of my imagination???? I need to lay off the acid…….or maybe I work in another dimension.
Either way your new format sucks

it sucks!!!

switch back!

Outstanding job! Best map information I’ve seen on the web.
Limited access highways, municipal boundries clearly marked. This, for the first time looks like web map information I actually rely on and not have verify using my collection of old Exxon maps!
June 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am
It’s so rude to delete my previously saved map address without previous notification and my agreement.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:50 am
Try finding “562 Weddell Dr, Sunnyvale, CA” which is just a random office location that I was trying to find. First, the new map can’t find it and says “were you trying to find ‘562 E Weddell Dr, Sunnyvale, CA 94089′?”. So then I copy and paste that nito the form and the new map cannot fond that either. So then I went to the old (”dial-up”? what kind of name is that?) map, and it showed immediately with no problem.
Guess which one I will be using from now on? Use those resources for something else.

1. Where are the gains? This thing is a pain in the butt.
2. Some of the negative reaction is from people who don’t like change, but most of it is from people who don’t like the new Yahoo Maps. Who are you to trivialize the concerns of other people whom you don’t know?
3. I would hardly say that going to Yahoo Maps is a “daily routine”. “Oh it’s 9am, time to go cruise Yahoo Maps.” I don’t think so.
Please think a little before you jump on and start writing to defend the inferior product of some people whom you don’t even know. Or… do you?

OK let me try this again. I think the blog machine did something when it saw the greater-than sign.

I think it is a great effort - In time there will be a lot of improvements to make life easier
June 15th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I’ve never used your map system before but noticed it was updated and took a look. As a Google maps user, I like that you have a similar option to view a satellite overlay as well as real time traffic. It helps to see landmarks and what kind of traffic I’m facing.
Things I like in Google that I don’t see here. 1) Cleaner interface. There are way too many advertisements cluttering the screen…which is kind of ironic as I always thought of Google as ‘the’ ad whore. I realize you need to make money, but not at the sake of making the map impossible to read. 2) I also like the responsiveness of Google’s maps better overall. When I double-click, their software instantly recognizes that I want to zoom in. Your software thinks too much and sometimes tries to just center the map and other times zooms. Why can’t it do both at the same time? 3) I also like the fact that it’s easy on Google to zoom in with a modifier key. I have tried to find this option on Yahoo, but don’t see it. Keep in mind these comments are based on an Intel Mac user using Firefox.
I haven’t had any of the database issues that others seem to have. Each search I’ve done has found the right place and right directions to get there. Every database has it’s issues…period. So that is definitely one thing people need to be patient with. I also didn’t have any issues with entering information in the search fields. It did a search fine with only a 5 digit zip.
So otther than interface and responsiveness, this seems like a solid system to me (again, not knowing what Yahoo Maps was like before…maybe it was this Nirvana that people seem so passionate about).
Finally, thanks for your team’s efforts. I can’t begin to imagine how much time and energy was put into this undertaking. Bringing any system in-house is a huge, thankless task. I wish you the best.

Everyone wants to build a bigger better mousetrap. (website)
I have been in the computer industry for over twenty years performing task anywhere from assembly language programming to WAN design and installation and every insignificant job in-between. Most of us from time to time have to justify are jobs by creating busy work for ourselves but nowhere in the computer industry does this justification shine more than
website improvement. I have seen over and over again a website that for the most part is absolutely perfect for the purpose it was created. Than for no apparent reason the site has all these new bells and whistles that add no improvement to the site but contrary actually either slow the site up or add layers that the average end user has no use for except to add confusion and/or frustration to the website that in its earlier version was easily maneuvered through. Your map website in the past was simple, streamlined and very easy to use. Your website that exist now is awkward and clumsy. I am presently a network manager and the last complaint I speak of comes from my own end users. Clean up the site and leave it alone, enough said.
June 15th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
I do not like the new site at all - I loved the old site and wish we had a way to access to the old one!!!!!
June 15th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
ok
June 15th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
I do not like the new site
June 15th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
I find the new maps quite inconvenient to use, since I have a long list of stored locations from the former dial up maps and now must use the scroll bar on the right hand side of the page to access any below the first few. I also don’t like inputting the street address, city, and state all on the same line. It is more intuitive to enter these on separate fields.
I know someone is staying employed by “improving” your maps but I wish you would go back to the old version. I am very displeased with the new one.
June 15th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Sorry, but I also meant to complain about how the distance in driving directions now shows up, stupidly, in rather fine print at the end of the directions. I often use this information in preparing expense reports and I don’t like to have to go hunt for it.
June 15th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
Hello
I am very desperate because I really need the old yahoo map,
is there any way I could use that? Can’t we have like both, the new and the old one?
June 16th, 2007 at 1:45 am
I find search field entry buggy, the interface unintuitive, and map print outs always wast half a sheet of paper.
It often can’t find a typed in search field, but if I select and copy it to the clipboard, close maps and reopen it, I can paste it and it can find it. That’s buggy. If I get a map of a location, print it, add a to location, print from/to diredtions, reverse the directions to get the “B” location in the “A” field and delete the “B” location to map the other end of the trip, it can’t find it. I have to copy it out of the “A” field, close maps, reopen maps, and again paste it back in the same field for it to find it. That is probably the same bug in a diferent form.
When I say inintuitive, I mean I’ll have to play your tour 20 times, and haven’t felt motivated to do so. Don’t use it often enough to feel like it.
I find it stupid to print maps on half a sheet of paper. Yahoo pays for your paper but doesn’t pay for mine. You should fill the sheet with it. It’s nuts. I’m not going to masturbate on my printer settings to get a good printout.
Last I knew, I couldn’t put in an intersection and find a city like I could long ago. The Radio always says the ramp from south bound US23 to west bound I94 i
