Yahoo! Travel Adds a new Map-on-Map Feature
Congratulations to the Yahoo! Travel team on their latest update! Big props for the cool new way in which they have used the Yahoo! Maps AJAX API in their new Travel Guides section. This new feature displays more detailed and thematic layers right on the map, a sort of map-on-map. You can use the standard Y! Map tools, such as Pan, Zoom, and view Satellite Imagery, and Y! Travel adds a slider to control the transparency of the new map overlays.
I’ve had a chance to play with it, and think this is a really great way to add context to your trip. The old Roman Forum map is fascinating, especially used with satellite imagery, and details provided for the Grand Canyon and National Mall will certainly help you get around (or decide where to park!). Here is a screen grab from the Roman Forum, but I think you’ll need to check it out for yourself.
Right now this is just a prototype, and they’re working on getting some more maps to put online, but I think the added value of this kind of integration is readily apparent and I’m looking forward to new map overlays as they become available.
Here are some more map overlays in Yahoo! Travel.
Boston Freedom Trail
Yosemite National Park
Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site
Independence Hall
Gettysburg National Military Park
San Diego International Airport
Philadelphia International Airport
Nice work!

[…] When I first saw this hack done at one of our Hack days, I was absolutely floored. What some clever folks did was allow you to overlay your own maps ontop of existing Y!Maps. No, not draw them, I’m saying that you can take a scan of a map that you got from that nice Park Ranger when you went in and layer it on top of Y!Maps. The Local and Maps blog has more details, but let me just say that this is an amazingly fast roll out, and a lot of the really amazing features haven’t been fully rolled out yet, but I do expect them to be. If you can match the scales up correctly, it would be great to do this with mass transit system maps, which would help people answer the big question of — how far is that address from [foo] BART station, etc?

[…] Yahoo! has launched a protoype that begins to make that a reality. Here’s a map of the National Mall with a tourist friendly map layered on top. This map plots the Freedom Trail on to the streets of Boston. This map of Philadephia International Airport identifies the different terminals. […]

This is great, but how about something similar and easier? Allow people to put URLs to map pages at a point on the map?
For example, I could put a link to the Giants Stadium seating chart on top of the building. When someone gets to max zoom (or a zoom level where Giants Stadium dominates the screen), they see a link to the seating chart.

NEW MAPS ARE TERRIBLE BECAUSE THEY DO NOT DOWNLOAD PROPERLY AND THEY ARE NOT FLEXIBLE!
WHEN I GO FROM A TO B I DO NOT WANT C THROUGH Z SECTIONS OF MAP DOWNLOADING FIRST! WHAT AM I, A TOURIST!?
ALSO THEY OVERLAYING MICRO MAP SHOULD BE MOVEABLE SO IT COVERS THE AREA OF LEAST INTEREST, WHICH WILL ALWAYS BE NEW ENGLAND!

Your new map site it is pits. It does not work at all and is no improvement over the prior system. Luckily there is still Mapquest!

I am a long time customer of Yahoo Maps and Directions. How can I address the part of your program where it is possible to save destinations? This is a an excellent feature, however I can no longer find it.

The new maps stink!
Not only do they have only one view:Street, rather than choice of Street, Airial, of Birds Eye such as the old maps, they don’t work with dual moniter setups such as I have.
With the old maps, when I went to full screen view I got both screens in full screen view. It was a double sized and full screen map divided across the two moniters.
What I get now is a simple large view map the same as it would be on one screen but devided on two screens, NOT FULL SCREEN.

The Map-on feature is really great, and takes the Yahoo travel portal to a completely new level.
I really think these mapping programs make a huge difference to the usability and functionality of portals such as Yahoos travel one.

I think that sometimes the “coolness” factor of certain features start to overrun the quick usefulness of things. Sometimes I just need quick and dirty directions without the bells and whistles.
