MacArthur Maze Detour Update
In response to the I-80 and I-580 freeway connector collapse in the San Francisco Bay Area that occurred on Sunday, April 29, we responded quickly by removing these ramps from our mapping system on Monday. As a result, Yahoo! Maps is now offering alternative routes to Bay Area drivers, which are expected to be in effect for several months until repairs are completed.
Further, on published advice from the City of Oakland, yesterday Yahoo! Maps promoted the West Grand Avenue detour as the primary method of getting from the San Francisco Bay Bridge to points east, along 580. We hope this helps in planning your route. As always, our maps are to be used as a guide, so please be sure to follow relevant signs and indicators as you drive. We will be sure to stay abreast of the routing in this area and return things to normal as changes dictate.
Good luck and happy commuting,
Mike Lawless, Sr. Product Manager, and the Yahoo! Maps Team

[…] Just a quick pointer to some nice work done by our colleagues on the Yahoo! Maps team. The recent collapse of a section of I-580 onto I-80 in Oakland, CA (affectionately known as the MacArthur Maze), got a lot of attention and is definitely a commuter’s nightmare right now. To help ease some of the commuting frustrations, the Yahoo! Maps team has removed the connector ramp from the mapping system and is offering some alternative routes to consider for the next few months. Here’s a sample route from Walnut Creek to San Francisco. Note. The I-80 -> I-880 connector has been fixed, and is likewise represented correctly now on Y! Maps.

[…] About a week ago, one of the major freeway connectors going into San Francisco kind of melted (luckily, no one was hurt too badly). This obviously would inconvenience a large number of commuters, many of whom are not equipped to travel over melted roadways. Within a day or two, though, the Yahoo! Maps team had rerouted everything around the collapsed bridges and whatnot, ensuring valid directions for all of those who were boldly forging ahead in their automobiles instead of opting for public transportation. And now that several of the connectors have opened up again, directions are flowing through them again. Kudos to the Maps team for keeping on top of this unexpected and massively disruptive traffic incident. […]

I use an app called Traffic2GO when I travel. It tells me where the traffic is and if it is getting better or worse. While it has some drawbacks (doesn’t actually send me alerts), I haven’t been really late to a meeting since.
